A nice normal day, wake up, eat breakfast, put on flip flops and walk the length of Copacabana beach (somewhat cloudy)...
....and down Ipanema beach.
Drink coconut water on the shore with our new friend Feyren.
Wander the side-streets of Ipanema and discover an awful lot of nice shops. Decide that Ipanema is the nice part of town where all the hip kids go and live, and Copacabana is beautiful but most folk visit it then clear off at night, explaining why its a little more sparsely-populated. Copa is, however, a little cheaper.
So today's most important observations : prices.
We went to the supermarket. We bought pasta, pasta sauce, tortilla chips, beer, baps, ham and cheese... and it was pretty much the same price as at home. Its nearly R$4 (Brazilian Real) to GB£1, so you can divide prices by 4 and its slightly more expensive than that, but even so. Some things are notably cheaper, for example football tickets or public transport (even taxis are quite reasonable, and local bus too, although long distance is a bit dearer).
But in some ways its a lot like Portugal. There isn't a huge selection of products (although the big supermarkets do offer everything you could reasonably ask for) but its nearly the same price to eat in as it is to eat out (like for like). A big bottle of Antarctica beer (pilsen) in the pub is about R$8, so about £2. Bargain... if you have a fund similar to travelling in Europe.
We also learned that Uruguay is even more expensive. Damn.
